Cold composing
1. Photo-type setting: it also called film-setting.
Phototypesetting is a fast, flexible, clean and inexpensive, photographic means a photo-sensitive film or paper is used for direct offset plate making, gravorr cycle, Screen and wrapped round plates for letterpress printing.
Phototypesetter can compose lines upto 100emspica in any type size.
Development of phototypesetting machine:
a. Modification of hot metal composing machine: a camera used for exposing a photographic form of paper in place casting machine and die case here master negative and character, symbols instead of brass.
b. Use of electromechanical devices: it increased speed and efficiency of the machine and reducing total cost of production.
c. Use of CRT tech: the phototypesetting machine using CRT tech flash character on the face of CRT and expose through lens. It is high speed technology using sophisticated computer electronics and an electronic video tube for character generate. It speed 10 k character per hour.

a. Keyboard: after feeding according required page and type set and manuscript data feed in magnetic tape, magnetic disc (hard disc) and perforated tape and activation of other unit machine.
b. Computer unit: the main task of a read an unjustified tape and make end-of-line decision.

Computer can be programmed to resolve line breaks-hyphen-less, discretionary, logic and exception dictionary.
a. Hyphen-less: (-) not used for word spacing improper.
b. Discretionary: it used for correct hyphen.
c. Logic system: correct word spacing with hyphenation.
d. Exception dictionary: not hyphen but according to the logic system.
c. Photo unit: Actually set the type. It has type font in the form of the disc, grid of or filmstrip having master negatives. As phototypesetting machines matured as a technology in the 1970s, more efficient methods were found for creating and subsequently editing text intended for the printed page. Previously, hot-metal typesetting equipment had incorporated a built-in keyboard, such that the machine operator would create both the original text and the medium (lead type slugs) that would create the printed page. Subsequent editing of this copy required that the entire process be repeated. The operator would re-keyboard some or all of the original text, incorporating the corrections and new material into the original draft.
CRT-based editing terminals, which can work compatibly with a variety of phototypesetting machines, were a major technical innovation in this regard. Keyboarding the original text on a CRT screen, with easy-to-use editing commands, is faster than keyboarding on a Linotype machine. Storing the text magnetically for easy retrieval and subsequent editing also saves time.
